Prepare for the H2H starting with 5000 steps a day and build up to 10,000 over the two weeks before the H2H. This will lead to 100,000 steps - just over 76 kms – or a walk from Timaru to Ashburton.  Great for teambuilding - challenge and support each other and walk your way to fitness.  Businesses please support staff by sponsoring them.

The Timaru District Council has made a special exception to allow dogs at Caroline Bay who are accompanying H2H participants. Please read and follow their requirements set out below.

Exemption is granted with the following conditions:

  • All dogs are removed from the area as soon as the event has finished.
  • There is sufficient control of all dogs during the event in accordance with the Dog Control Act 1996 and the Timaru District Bylaw 2006. This includes a minimum requirement that ALL dogs participating must be on a lead at ALL times.
  • There are sufficient resources to ensure that all dog waste is cleaned up immediately during the event. This also includes a requirement for all dog owners to carry bags for waste on the run itself.
  • The Bylaw is complied with in all other aspects with regards to animal control.

Sport Canterbury has provided these helpful 6 week training programmes to ease you into running and gradually build your fitness before the event. Print them out, put them somewhere you can see them, and then get going!

You can mix up the walking and running options to suit yourself. It helps to remain active on your rest days too. Try walking or cycling to work, going for a swim, or any other sports or exercise you like.

Check out our local walkways and parks for a bit of variety in your training and to give your legs a break from the hard footpaths. Remember that some gentle stretches will help take any stiffness or tiredness from your leg muscles.

Roads along the route are not closed for the event, so it is important to take care and be aware of traffic along the way. Please observe the following:

  • For everyone’s safety, please run or walk on the left hand footpath or grass verge
  • Please do not run or walk on the road (re Hadlow start: once you get onto Gleniti Road)
  • Please observe all road rules – you do not have the right of way at intersections
  • Watch out for approaching vehicles at the road intersections you cross at
  • Follow any directions of the Race Marshalls at each intersection
  • The Run Marshalls are there to assist you to cross safely and to warn approaching traffic of your presence – they cannot stop the traffic
  • If you need help or observe a runner that needs help, please ask for assistance from the nearest run Marshall, or go into the nearest house, telephone 111 for emergency services
  • Use the left hand footpath or grass verge, not the road
  • Observe all the usual road rules and obey any instructions given by police
  • Participants do not have any special right of way when crossing roads
  • When crossing at any other intersection or a side road follow the usual pedestrian crossing rules
  • For full information please view our Road Safety Plan here

It's also your responsibility to monitor your own health and well-being, including advice about exercise or any medication you are taking. Please don't take risks!

St John Ambulance will be in attendance - dial 111 for help.
